Manchester City vs Norwich Prediction: Betting Tips & Odds

Manchester City and Norwich City meet at the Etihad Stadium on Friday morning New Zealand time in the third round of the Carabao Cup, with City beginning their defence of the trophy they won against Arsenal at Wembley in March.

Maresca will ring the changes with Sunderland visiting on Sunday. But even a reshuffled City squad has more quality than most Championship sides can deal with, and Norwich have conceded 13 goals in seven league games. 

In this Manchester City vs Norwich preview, I look at why this tie could still produce goals despite what the match result odds suggest. I’ve got a goals-market angle at $2.80 for those after football tips this week.

Manchester City

Five wins from five to open the season. I’m not sure what more you’d want from a side adjusting to life after Pep Guardiola.

A 2-1 opening-day win over Bournemouth was followed by a 4-1 thumping at Crystal Palace, a professional 1-0 over Coventry, a 2-0 clean sheet in Porto on their Champions League opener, and then the derby. That was a strange afternoon. 

Phil Foden kicked out at Bruno Fernandes in the 23rd minute and got sent off for violent conduct, leaving City a man down for over an hour. Erling Haaland scored in the 60th anyway. City ground it out at Old Trafford with 10 men, and the result showed a lot of this group’s resolve under Maresca.

Rotation here is inevitable. James Trafford will start in goal, and I’d expect Nico O’Reilly and Elliot Anderson in midfield with fringe players elsewhere. Jeremy Doku could return from the calf injury that’s sidelined him since the Community Shield - Maresca hinted last week it wouldn’t be long.

Team News: Doku nearing a return. Foden suspended from Premier League action but potentially available for this fixture. Trafford expected to get the gloves. No fresh concerns from the derby.

Predicted Lineup: Trafford; Lewis, Guehi, Khusanov, Gvardiol; O’Reilly, Anderson; McAtee, Cherki, Grealish; Haaland.

Norwich City

It’s been all or nothing for Norwich. Three wins and four defeats from seven Championship matches without a single stalemate. They hammered Burnley 4-1 at Carrow Road and won 3-1 at Sheffield United, but also got thumped 3-0 at Millwall and conceded four in a wild 4-3 loss at Middlesbrough on Saturday.

Mohamed Toure has five goals in nine matches across all competitions. He’s quick and direct, and against a rotated City backline, I wouldn’t be shocked if he caused problems early. Andre Brooks and Anis Ben Slimane have been involved in most of what Norwich do going forward.

I don’t think Norwich can win here. But they score goals - 19 in nine matches this season - and a City defence without its first-choice centre-backs will give them opportunities to exploit.

Team News: Ahmed out for the season (knee). Topic also sidelined with a cruciate ligament injury. Duffy and Mahovo are fitness doubts.

Predicted Lineup: Kovacevic; Stacey, McConville, Cordoba, Chrisene; McLean, Wright; Brooks, Ben Slimane, Musaba; Toure.

• Norwich haven’t beaten City since a 3-2 victory at Carrow Road in September 2019.
• City won both Premier League meetings in 2021-22 by a combined scoreline of 9-0.
• Norwich have scored in seven of their nine matches this season across all competitions.
• Both teams scored in five of Norwich’s seven Championship fixtures this season.

It’s not exciting, but I’m backing City to cruise through. Rotation or not, the quality gap is massive, and the Etihad is a level above anything Norwich have faced this season.

I’m calling it 3-1 or 4-1. Norwich are too attack-minded to defend deep and hope for penalties - it’s not how Clement has set them up. Toure and Brooks will play on the front foot, and a reshuffled City defence will give them a chance or two. But Haaland only needs a couple of openings, and City will create plenty.

City will score. I’m as close to certain on that as I can be. Even a rotated side will have Haaland and Cherki, and enough creativity to break apart a defence that has leaked 13 goals in seven Championship games.

Norwich scoring is what interests me, as I think they get one. Toure has been clinical in front of goal, Brooks is looking like a shrewd signing, and a reshuffled City backline without Dias at the heart of it isn’t quite as imposing. Norwich have scored in seven of nine this season, and I don’t see them rolling over at the Etihad.
