Fairview Motors Waikato Hurdle (3200m)

Selections:

Squire – 3.10

Pacheco – 4.60

Roc Up Ralph – 6.50

BEST BET – Squire

The top three in the market square up once again following a competitive meeting here three weeks ago. It was Squire who poked his head in front in that contest, taking his record to four wins from five at the track. He won well that day and is the one to beat.

THE DANGER – Roc Up Ralph

Roc Up Ralph was sandwiched between Squire and Pacheco in that contest three weeks ago and seems well priced considering that form. Hamish McNeill returns to the saddle and the two have been succesful in the past, there could be more to come here.

VALUE BET – Pacheco

The value could lie with Pacheco, send off as the favourite three weeks ago, connections would have been disappointed that he finished behind both Squire and Roc Up Ralph. He has mixed it up in better company than this in the past and if a seven-day turnaround doesn’t catch him out he should be competitive here.

Ken & Roger Browne Memorial Maiden Steeplechase (3900m)

Selections:

Red Ned – 2.20

Doctor Iris – 3.20

Odysseus – 14.00

BEST BET – Doctor Iris

Although this is tougher, the nature of Doctor Iris’s hurdle victory three weeks ago is tough to ignore. Routing the field, she looked highly progressive and one to watch. Whether she can translate her hurdle form to fences remains unknown, but she is in the form of her life and should go well.

THE DANGER – Red Ned

Red Ned represents some good connections and prepared well for this race by winning eight weeks ago. Likely to be the pace angle, if he jumps well, he could cause bother to those looking to prove their jumping credentials. He is likely to jump off as the short price favourite but is by no means a guarantee.

VALUE BET – Odysseus

At a price it could be worth paying attention to Odysseus. A veteran, he hasn’t won for a few years now but did place second on his final start last season. He blew up on his reappearance but should be far fitter here and could well be in contention to place.

Signature Homes Waikato Steeplechase (3900m)

Selections:

West Coast – 3.50

Justice – 5.50

Countryman – 13.00

BEST BET – West Coast

The feature race of the day comes in the sixth contest of the day where West Coast will be hoping to add to his excellent track record. A winner in convincing fashion last time out here, he has the form, should love conditions and should see out the trip. He is the one to beat.

THE DANGER – Justice

Leaderboard can’t be discounted, but we think the main danger could well come from Justice. A winner at Matamata three starts ago, he had a month off after a disappointing fourth at Woodville but didn’t seem to have the stamina for the occasion. He should be much more race ready now and can’t be discounted.

VALUE BET – Countryman

The best value of the contest could well sit with Countryman. Capable on his day, he had placed in four consecutive efforts before making his return at Te Aroha at the start of the month. That was his first start in eight months, and he was in clear need of the run. With that run now in his system, he should be far more competitive this time around and looks to have a live chance.
