Challenge Carterton Handicap (1400m)

Selections:

Intention – 2.00

Brewster – 4.60

Peppery – 11.00

BEST BET – Intention

Our best bet of the day comes in race 3 where Intention sets the standard. Having run twelve times, she has been a winner and despite now going 98 weeks without a win, she produced her best run for a good while when finishing second at Otaki. This should be easier and she should take the beating.

THE DANGER – Brewster

Brewster could be a danger to all in the race. An interesting runner, he flopped on debut before taking a competitive handicap at Te Aroha second time up. He was then off the track for five months before returning a few weeks ago at Waverley with a middling effort. He should be fitter this time around and should give another good account of himself.

VALUE BET – Peppery

Peppery is the veteran of the race having made 45 starts. From those runs, five wins have come, including last Sunday at Woodviille. That win came over 1600m and he drops down to a distance where he is yet to taste success, however his last run was hugely promising and he could be one to monitor here.

NZ Forest Works Handicap - (1000m)

Selections:

o’Sweet Darling – 2.60

Magill – 4.60

Geneva Queen - 7.00

BEST BET – o’Sweet Darling

Race 7 is arguably the most competitive contest of the day where several horses look to hold a decent chance. o’Sweet Darling is our pick. Having made just three starts in her career, connections seem to have found a trip that is perfect for her. With two wins from three starts, she has impressive early speed and could well be hard to peg back when she hits the front.

THE DANGER – Magill

Magill headlines a strong list of challengers and he boasts some of the best form in the contest. Having raced just four times, he won his third start before running a cracker last time out in Open company where he finished second. A repeat of that performance should see him right in the mix.

VALUE BET – Geneva Queen

The value of the race could lie with Geneva Queen. Having made just five starts, she heads into this contest in cracking form having won her last two starts. She has form at the distance but will be having her first run at the track. She represents top class connections and is hard to ignore.

Central Itm Carterton Maiden - (1200m)

Selections:

Vahvay – 4.00

Potcheen – 5.00

Sandbar – 15.00

BEST BET – Vahray

Race 5 is another tricky looking contest but Vahray is a horse that will have backers. Looking to bounce back after finishing fifth at Taupo last time out. The three-year-old filly had previously finished second at Trentham and boasts a solid record of two seconds and a third from five starts. Drawn favourably in barrier two, she could be the one to beat.

THE DANGER – Potcheen

The most interesting horse in the lineup is Potcheen. Having made just one start, she made an encouraging debut when finishing second at Taupo despite beginning awkwardly. There could be plenty more to come, and with Kate Hercock retaining the ride, she looks capable of going one better in this contest.

VALUE BET – Sandbar

Sandbar is our value play of the day and despite her long odds, she has shown steady improvement in her last two starts, finishing fifth before producing a fourth-place effort at Otaki last time out. The three-year-old filly is still searching for her first victory but looks capable of taking another step forward. A wide draw makes things tougher, but her chances can’t be completely dismissed.

Jockey Of The Day – Kate Hercock

Kate Hercock has recently returned to action following a six-month injury absence and will be eager to make up for lost time. With more than 470 career victories, including success aboard Manzor Blue in the Group 3 Wellington Cup earlier this year, Hercock has proven her ability at a high level. She has several promising rides at Tauherenikau on Sunday, including Potcheen, who finished second on debut and looks a strong chance of breaking her maiden.

Kate Hercock rides:

R1 – 3 – Ashwyn – 8.00

R5 – 7 – Potcheen – 6.00

R6 – 8 – Janavarose – 34.00
