Our best bet comes from race 3 where Royal Assett will be hoping to land a first race of her career. Having started with a placed effort on debut, she stepped up to Open company and finished in the middle of the pack. She returns to a level where this should be easier and she is the one to beat.

THE DANGER – Vodka And Caviar

In a race full of newcomers one of the dangers could come there. However, Vodka And Caviar has experience on his side and connections will be hopeful of building on her second-place last time out at Matamata. That run came after an 18-week break, and she may be even better here.

VALUE BET – Proteus

Proteus could be the value play of the contest. A debut second offered up plenty of encouragement before she too was pitched into much tougher company. She boasts a similar profile to Royal Assett and should give a good account of herself at a big price.

BEST BET – Passion ‘N’ Pride

The fifth race of the day is typical of the card and is a trappy affair, however Passion ‘N’ Pride could well take the honours. Hailing from a top yard, she has two placed efforts from four starts, including last time out when she ran a great race at Te Repa. That came after a 25-week break and more can be expected here.

THE DANGER – Unswayed

Unswayed could lead the betting, and he has shown plenty of signs of promise. A debut second showed signs of potential before he was disappointing last time out. Clearly capable of running well on a heavy track, the more rain that falls, the better.

VALUE BET – Compulsory

With those at the top of the market potentially vulnerable, Compulsory could be a player at a price. A veteran of 34 races, it is a little off putting that he hasn’t yet poked his head in front, however he has placed on eight different occasions. This race is in his wheelhouse and he can’t be glossed over.

BEST BET – Tiantai

Race 9 is another competitive contest, but Tiantai will have plenty of backers. Unexposed compared to most in this field, she has two wins and two placed efforts from her six starts. She is potentially classy and will hope to land another contest here.

THE DANGER – Greenwich

There are plenty of dangers, one of them has to be Greenwich. Experienced with 25 starts, he has three wins but usually runs in a grade much higher than this. He resumed with a middling finish after a six-month break and should be far fitter here. There is plenty to like eased in grade and he could be one for the shortlist.

VALUE BET – Hakushu

Hakushu is our long shot of the day. A winner last time out at Ellerslie, that was a career best performance and a repeat of that would see him go close. He has a 21 week break to contend with but he can’t be discounted.
