Kicking off today in Rosehill with Thebudgiesmugla in the Listed Queen Elizabeth II Cup. He wasn’t the best last time out at this track in the Lord Mayors Cup, but that was on a Heavy track; this one is Soft, where he has a much better record of 4:3-0-0. The distance looks a tad more suitable as well, plus he’ll be flying with just 53kg on his back. He is good enough to redeem himself here.

In the Group 1 JJ Atkins, I think Berzelius is good enough to overcome the even-money favourite. The 2YO comes into this in great form, taking out the Group 2 Sires' Produce here at Eagle Farm two weeks ago. He draws slightly better here and under set weights conditions again, he can just rinse and repeat. Plus, Tommy Berry, who was on board last time out, sticks.

It’s the race we’ve all been waiting for - the Stradbroke Handicap! A very open field awaits us in the $3 million Group 1, and I have to side with the narrow favourite, Headley Grange. The 5YO kicked off his campaign in the best way possible last time out, winning the Group 1 Kingsford Smith Cup here at Eagle Farm. Adam Hyeronimus is on board once again, and the barrier draw isn’t the worst.

Stats and Insights

  • Big Swinger brings strong metropolitan form into this race, including a Flemington win, and gets every chance from the inside draw. He looks the one to beat in Race 5 at Sandown.
  • The Cristal resumed with a solid third at Hawkesbury and has already proven she can improve sharply second-up. She looks the one they’ll all have to catch in Race 6 at Newcastle.
  • Cool Memory returned with a strong placing at Belmont and boasts an outstanding record at this track. He can pop up there at almost double-digit odds in Race 8 in Belmont.
